How much asphalt do I need?

Enter the total paved area and the finished compacted thickness. The calculator converts that volume to asphalt mass using the editable density, applies any contingency you choose and then rounds the result to the selected purchase increment.

Should I enter compacted thickness or loose asphalt thickness?

Use the finished compacted thickness required for the project. Loose laydown thickness depends on the mix and compaction process, so it should not be substituted for the compacted design thickness unless your contractor or specification tells you to do so.

How many tons are in a cubic yard of asphalt?

There is no single exact conversion because asphalt mass depends on mix density. JobsiteMeasure keeps compacted volume and tonnage separate and uses the editable density assumption to convert between them.

Why is the recommended asphalt order higher than the calculated requirement?

The geometric calculation is shown first. Any contingency is then added and the purchase quantity is rounded upward to the ordering increment you selected, so the recommended order can be slightly higher than the theoretical requirement.

Can I calculate an irregular driveway or parking area?

Yes. Use Irregular / multi-section mode to add rectangles, triangles, circles, semicircles or trapezoids and subtract cut-outs. Those sections are combined into one total paved area before the asphalt calculation is performed.
