How wall, gable and opening area is calculated
For each rectangular wall group, the calculator multiplies width by height and quantity. For each triangular gable group, it multiplies base width by the vertical gable height, divides by two, then multiplies by quantity.
Doors, windows and other rectangular openings use width × height × quantity. Those deductions come off the combined gross wall and gable area to produce net siding area. In known-net-area mode, the entered area is already net, so openings are not deducted again.
Gross area, net area and siding squares
Gross siding area is the total rectangular wall area plus triangular gable area before openings. Net siding area is the gross area after measured openings are deducted.
A siding square is an area unit used for ordering: 1 siding square = 100 ft². It is not a carton or a panel. Raw siding squares equal net area in square feet divided by 100.
Why allowance is separate
The editable allowance is applied after opening deductions and before whole-product rounding. The raw net requirement remains visible so the planning addition is never hidden inside the geometry.
The calculator starts at 0% because authoritative industry guidance does not establish one universal post-deduction percentage. Actual waste varies with wall layout, gables, corners, starter cuts, short pieces, damaged material, color matching, product profile, reuse of offcuts and installer practice.
Why product coverage must come from the exact product
Cartons and panels are purchase units, not standard areas. Manufacturer catalogs show that panel counts and carton coverage differ among profiles. Overall or nominal panel dimensions may include overlaps and portions that are not exposed after installation.
Use the current usable or net coverage stated on the package label or in technical literature for the exact product. The calculator does not infer coverage from a double-four, triple-three or other profile description, and V1 contains no product presets.

Whole cartons, panels and purchased coverage
When product coverage is selected, net area divided by usable coverage gives raw theoretical units. The allowance is applied, then the result is rounded upward because a fraction of a carton, panel or package may not be purchasable.
Purchased coverage can exceed the allowance-adjusted requirement because of that final whole-unit rounding. The result reports both purchased coverage and the excess above the adjusted area.
Planning and procurement limits
This page estimates siding area and optional product units only. It does not choose a siding product or installation system, optimize panel layout, seams, cuts or offcut reuse, or calculate J-channel, starter strip, utility trim, corner posts, soffit, fascia, housewrap, insulation, fasteners, flashing, caulk, sheathing, mounting blocks or disposal.

One siding square equals 100 square feet of siding area.
Should I deduct windows and doors?
Use the measured mode to deduct the exact rectangular openings you choose. If you enter a known net area, do not deduct them again.
Does one carton always cover one siding square?
No. Carton coverage and panel counts vary by product. Enter the usable coverage printed for the exact product.
Why did the calculator round up?
Theoretical product units can be fractional. The purchase result rounds the allowance-adjusted quantity upward to a whole carton, panel or package.
Does this include trim and accessories?
No. Those quantities need product-system details or additional measured linear geometry and are outside this V1 calculator.
