How drywall area is calculated
For one rectangular room, the four-wall area is 2 × (length + width) × wall height. If you include the ceiling, its length × width area is added separately. In individual-surfaces mode, each width × height area is multiplied by its quantity and then combined.
Every door, window, or other rectangular opening you enter is calculated as width × height × quantity. Those deductions are shown separately and subtracted from gross surface area. An opening total equal to or larger than the gross surface area is rejected instead of producing a negative estimate.
Walls only or walls plus ceiling?
Include the ceiling only when it is part of the drywall scope you are measuring. The result keeps wall area and ceiling area separate, so a room estimate can be reproduced and checked. If a project has sloped ceilings or unlike wall sizes, measure them as individual surfaces rather than forcing them into the rectangular-room formula.
Common drywall sheet sizes
The three US presets use their stated planning dimensions. Manufacturing tolerances can exist, and other widths and lengths are sold, so the exact product data should take priority. A rounded metric product such as 1.2 × 2.4 m is not treated as the exact equivalent of a 4 × 8 ft sheet; use Custom dimensions for the product you will buy.

Theoretical coverage versus whole-sheet purchasing
Net area divided by sheet area gives a raw theoretical sheet equivalent. The editable allowance is then applied to that unrounded requirement. Only after those steps does the calculator round upward to whole sheets. Purchased sheet area can therefore exceed the adjusted theoretical area.
Different sheet sizes cover different areas and can return different whole-sheet counts. Longer sheets may also change seams and cut efficiency, but an area calculation cannot prove which orientation or layout is practical at a particular jobsite.

Why the allowance is editable
The 10% field is a planning start, not a universal rule. Georgia-Pacific's current estimating practice includes 10% for cutouts and waste, while other major manufacturer estimators exclude waste and tell users to adjust for the job. Sheet orientation, room shape, cuts, damaged boards, offcut reuse and installer layout can all change the appropriate amount.

Drywall calculator FAQs
Does this calculator deduct doors and windows?
Yes, but only the rectangular opening groups you enter. Each width × height deduction is multiplied by its quantity and shown before net area is calculated.
Does a 4 × 12 sheet always mean fewer seams or less waste?
No. It has more nominal area than a 4 × 8 sheet, so the theoretical count can be lower, but transport, orientation, joint layout and useful cut reuse determine the real job outcome.
Does the result include screws, tape, joint compound or corner bead?
No. Those products depend on the chosen system, layer count, framing, finish details and product-specific yield. This version calculates drywall sheet quantity only.
Is Sheetrock the same as drywall?
Drywall is the common generic US term for gypsum board. Sheetrock® is a USG brand name often used descriptively in conversation.
Does this calculator choose drywall thickness or type?
No. It converts measurements into a planning quantity and does not select a product, design the installation, or determine code compliance.
Method, sources and planning limits
Geometry and upward whole-sheet rounding are reproducible mathematics. Sheet dimensions are named planning dimensions, the allowance is an editable planning input, and price is used only when supplied by you. Manufacturer data for the exact product being purchased takes priority.
