What this underlayment quantity means

The calculator converts measured roof-surface area into a theoretical roll quantity, applies the allowance you enter, and then rounds upward to whole rolls for purchasing. It estimates underlayment quantity only; it does not design a roof assembly or select a product.

Known area, roofing squares, and measured planes

Known-area mode accepts a roof-surface total directly. Roofing-squares mode uses the US roofing-industry definition 1 roofing square = 100 ft². Measured-plane mode adds width × length × quantity for each rectangular roof plane.

None of these modes silently treats building footprint as sloped roof area. If your source is a footprint, obtain the actual roof-surface area separately before using this calculator.

Nominal roll area versus usable coverage

Nominal area is roll width multiplied by roll length. It can differ from installed usable coverage because adjacent courses or roll sections overlap. Manufacturer literature may state coverage while expressly excluding laps, which is why nominal dimensions alone should not be treated as guaranteed net coverage.

Manufacturer-stated usable coverage is the preferred input when the selected product publishes it. The calculator does not contain generic product coverage or infer coverage from roll weight.

How the lap geometry method works

The geometry method calculates a repeating usable rectangle as (roll width − side lap) × (roll length − end lap). Side lap must remain smaller than roll width, and end lap must remain smaller than roll length.

This model charges one side lap and one end lap to each repeated roll module. A real layout may recover material at a first edge, while roof shape and installation sequence can create other losses. Treat the result as an explicit planning model, not a cut or installation plan.

Raw rolls, allowance, and whole-roll purchasing

Project area divided by effective usable coverage gives raw theoretical rolls. The editable allowance is applied to that unrounded value. The final purchase quantity is then rounded upward to a whole roll, so it can exceed both the raw and adjusted theoretical quantities.

The 0% default is deliberately neutral. Hips, valleys, ridges, penetrations, cutoffs, roof shape and product installation pattern can change the allowance appropriate for a particular job.
