Sitework quantity calculator
Culvert Bedding & Backfill Calculator
Calculate culvert bedding and backfill quantities from the trench dimensions, pipe outside diameter and bedding depth specified for the installation.
Calculate culvert bedding & backfill quantities
This culvert backfill calculator separates the total trench excavation into pipe displacement, bedding and remaining backfill. It also converts bank excavation to loose spoil using the swell percentage you enter.
Formula: Backfill volume = trench volume − pipe outside volume − bedding volume. Trench volume = length × width × depth; circular pipe displacement uses the pipe outside diameter.
Use it for culvert bedding quantity, culvert backfill cubic yards, pipe-culvert excavation and culvert spoil estimates.
Step 1
Enter project dimensions
Use dimensions from the applicable drawing, specification or field takeoff. Switch between US / Imperial and metric at any time; entered dimensions are converted automatically.
Step 2
Quantity result
Bank excavation is in-place volume. Loose spoil applies the entered swell percentage. Backfill is a geometric balance and does not add a compaction factor unless explicitly represented by an input.
Worked example
The example below uses the calculator's starting dimensions so the inputs and outputs are visible to searchers and can be checked independently.
Example inputs
| Culvert length | 40 ft |
|---|---|
| Trench width | 6 ft |
| Trench depth | 6 ft |
| Pipe outside diameter | 3 ft |
| Bedding depth | 0.5 ft |
| Excavated-soil swell | 20 % |
Example results
| Bank excavation | 53.333 yd³ |
|---|---|
| Pipe displacement | 10.472 yd³ |
| Bedding volume | 4.444 yd³ |
| Backfill volume | 38.417 yd³ |
| Loose excavated spoil | 64 yd³ |
How the calculation works
Backfill volume = trench volume − pipe outside volume − bedding volume. Trench volume = length × width × depth; circular pipe displacement uses the pipe outside diameter.
FHWA FP-24 standard drawings include pipe-culvert bedding and concrete-pipe installation details in Section 602. Use the bedding, trench and backfill requirements specified for your project.

Scope: verify dimensions, material specifications, excavation support, compaction, reinforcement, structural or hydraulic design and local requirements independently. JobsiteMeasure estimates quantities; it does not design the installation.
Culvert Bedding & Backfill Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate culvert backfill?
Start with trench excavation volume, then subtract the outside volume occupied by the pipe and the bedding volume. The balance is the geometric backfill space.
Why use pipe outside diameter rather than inside diameter?
Backfill cannot occupy the physical space taken by the pipe, so displacement is based on the pipe outside diameter. Use the actual outside diameter for the product being installed.
Does this calculator determine the required bedding depth?
No. Bedding depth and material are installation requirements. Enter the value required by the project drawings, specifications and pipe manufacturer.
