Pipe Concrete Encasement Calculator

Calculate concrete around a pipe from the encasement envelope shown on the project detail. The calculator subtracts the pipe outside volume before applying your ordering allowance.

Calculate pipe concrete encasement quantities

This pipe concrete encasement calculator finds the gross rectangular concrete envelope, subtracts the volume displaced by the pipe or pipes, and reports net concrete plus the allowance-adjusted cubic yards to order.

Formula: Net concrete = (encasement width × encasement height × length) − (π × pipe outside radius² × length × pipe count).

Use it for pipe encasement concrete volume, concrete around pipe, concrete surround cubic yards and pipe-displacement takeoffs.

Step 1

Enter project dimensions

Use dimensions from the applicable drawing, specification or field takeoff. Switch between US / Imperial and metric at any time; entered dimensions are converted automatically.

Step 2

Quantity result

Bank excavation is in-place volume. Loose spoil applies the entered swell percentage. Backfill is a geometric balance and does not add a compaction factor unless explicitly represented by an input.

Worked example

The example below uses the calculator's starting dimensions so the inputs and outputs are visible to searchers and can be checked independently.

Example inputs

Encasement length40 ft
Concrete envelope width3 ft
Concrete envelope height3 ft
Pipe outside diameter1.5 ft
Identical pipes in envelope1 count
Concrete allowance5 %

Example results

Concrete to order11.251 yd³
Net geometric concrete10.715 yd³
Gross envelope13.333 yd³
Pipe displacement2.618 yd³

How the calculation works

Net concrete = (encasement width × encasement height × length) − (π × pipe outside radius² × length × pipe count).

Concrete encasement dimensions and reinforcement, where required, are design inputs. This calculator does not select cover, strength or reinforcement; it converts supplied geometry into a concrete quantity.

Scope: verify dimensions, material specifications, excavation support, compaction, reinforcement, structural or hydraulic design and local requirements independently. JobsiteMeasure estimates quantities; it does not design the installation.

Pipe Concrete Encasement Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate concrete encasement around a pipe?

Calculate the gross concrete envelope, calculate the outside volume of every pipe inside it, then subtract pipe displacement. This calculator performs those steps and converts the net result to cubic yards.

Should I deduct the inside diameter or outside diameter of the pipe?

Use outside diameter because the full physical pipe displaces concrete. Check the actual product outside diameter rather than assuming it equals nominal pipe size.

Does this calculator determine concrete cover or reinforcement?

No. Envelope dimensions, cover, concrete specification and reinforcement must come from the project design or applicable standard detail.
