The short answer
You need three things: the paved area, the finished compacted asphalt depth and a density appropriate to the mix being ordered. Multiply area by depth to get compacted volume, then multiply that volume by density to get mass.

Worked example: 1,000 sq ft at 3 inches
Suppose a project covers 1,000 square feet and the specified finished compacted depth is 3 inches. Three inches is 0.25 ft, so the compacted volume is 250 cubic feet.

How depth changes the amount of asphalt
Tonnage rises directly with compacted depth when area and density stay the same.

This is why depth should come from the project specification or qualified design rather than from a calculator default.
Measure the paved area carefully
For a rectangle, area is simply length × width. Irregular driveways and parking areas are usually easier to measure as several simple sections, adding paved pieces and subtracting islands or other cut-outs.
Use compacted depth, not loose delivery depth
The quantity calculation should be based on the finished compacted pavement thickness specified for the job. Loose material placed before rolling is not the same thing as final compacted thickness.
Density is a planning assumption, not a universal constant
Asphalt mixes and achieved compaction vary. JobsiteMeasure uses 2,350 kg/m³ as an editable planning density because the Minnesota Asphalt Pavement Association publishes 110 lb per square-yard-inch in its asphalt calculator, which converts to about 2,349 kg/m³.
Keep contingency separate from the raw requirement
The theoretical quantity is not automatically the amount you should purchase. A good estimate shows the raw tonnage first, then applies an explicit project-specific allowance.
US tons, metric tonnes and cubic yards are not interchangeable
- US short ton: 2,000 lb.
- Metric tonne: 1,000 kg.
- Cubic yard: a volume, not a mass.
Common asphalt quantity mistakes
- Using inches as though they were feet when calculating volume.
- Using loose depth instead of finished compacted depth.
- Measuring a bounding rectangle without subtracting exclusions.
- Treating one density as exact for every asphalt mix.
- Hiding contingency inside thickness or area.
- Confusing US short tons with metric tonnes.
