The short answer
For general water-conservation landscaping, the University of Minnesota Extension describes a 2–3 inch organic-mulch layer. Its guidance for newly planted trees and shrubs uses 3 inches and keeps the root flare and trunk clear. Those are useful contexts, not a universal specification for every plant, site or product.
Before calculating: measure any reusable mulch already in place and enter only the additional depth required. Then use the Mulch Calculator to convert the measured area and new depth into cubic yards or whole bags.
Calculate the new depth, not the whole existing layer
A common over-ordering mistake is to enter the desired finished depth even when part of that layer is already present. If the old mulch remains serviceable, subtract its measured depth from the target layer.
New depth to enter = target finished depth − reusable existing depth
Example: if the target is 3 inches and an even 1.5 inches remains, enter a new depth of 1.5 inches. If the old layer is patchy, compacted, contaminated or being removed, measure and plan the actual work rather than relying on that subtraction alone.
Use the project context to choose a starting point

Climate, soil, plant sensitivity, drainage, mulch type and maintenance goals can all change the appropriate layer. Local extension guidance, the product label and a project professional take priority over a general web calculator.
Keep mulch away from trunks and the root flare
Depth is not the only measurement that matters around woody plants. The University of Minnesota Extension says the root flare should remain bare and mulch should not contact the trunk. Do not turn a volume estimate into a “mulch volcano” around a tree.
The calculator can subtract a circular or irregular cut-out from the measured area. That makes the quantity estimate reflect the clear space you intend to leave rather than calculating mulch for an area that should stay uncovered.
Measure before ordering
- Mark the exact bed or mulched area, including any islands and exclusions.
- Measure several points in the existing layer; do not assume it is even.
- Choose a target supported by the plants, material and local guidance.
- Enter only the new layer and keep the calculator allowance separate.
- Check the supplier's bulk increment or the cubic-foot volume printed on each bag.
Mulch depth questions
Is 3 inches always the right mulch depth?
No. It is a source-supported starting context for common organic landscape mulch, including newly planted trees and shrubs, but the appropriate depth depends on the project and existing layer.
Should I remove old mulch before adding more?
That is a condition and maintenance decision rather than a calculation rule. If the old material will remain, measure its usable depth. If it will be removed or cannot count toward the target layer, calculate the replacement layer instead.
Does the ordering allowance increase the mulch depth?
